What to expect from therapy

In order for your therapist to get to know you better, the first two to three sessions (the intake process) will focus on information gathering about your background. These sessions typically emphasize your childhood and adolescence, your family, and your relationships. Because we are a group of sex therapists, we will also ask you intimate questions about your sexuality. Often, additional areas for discussion will emerge through these conversations. You do not have to answer questions about topics that you are not ready to talk about. At the same time, we want to stress that sometimes the most uncomfortable topics to talk about are also indicators of significant areas for growth. Upon completing the intake process, you will identify goals with your therapist that you would like to work toward.

As therapy progresses, your therapist will work with you to move at a pace that: (a) honors the difficulty in opening up about sensitive topics and, (b) identifies areas where you may need to challenge existing beliefs in order to accomplish your goals. Depending on your therapist’s approach and your goals, your therapist may give you “homework” assignments to complete in between sessions. These assignments are intended to encourage self-reflection so that you can make steady progress toward your long-term goals. We encourage you to share open and honest feedback with your therapist throughout your work together so that they can adjust their approach to meet you where you’re at.

Please ask your therapist any questions about themselves, their professional training, their approach to therapy, or on any other topic that will you help gauge whether or not your therapist is a good fit for you. It can take a few sessions to gauge whether you feel your therapist “gets” you - especially since the first several sessions are focused on gathering extensive information. If, after a few sessions, you genuinely feel like your therapist may not be a good fit for you, we will be happy to provide referrals to other therapists in the community that may be better suited to meet your needs.
